Abstract
Polybasic carboxylic acids or anhydrides thereof are condensed with alcoholamines with or without the addition of polyhydric alcohols to give a thermo-hardening resinous product. The products may be used as softening agents for artificial and natural resins, as vulcanization accelerators and as a catalyst and softening agent with phenol-formaldehyde condensation products. As polybasic carboxylic acids there may be used phthalic acid or anhydride, adipic acid, sebacic acid, citric acid, benzophenone dicarboxylic acid, succinic acid or its homologues, aromatic di- and polycarboxylic acids alone or in mixture. As alcoholamines there may be used tri-, di- or monoethanolamine in a pure form or in mixtures such as technical ethanolamine mixtures and they may be diluted with glycerol or other polyhydric alcohols. Soaps appear to be first formed and these are transposed into esters of the amines on strong heating. Acid esters still soluble in alcohol or acid or neutral ester salts may be used as softening agents for lacquers or for synthetic resins capable of being hardened. After hardening they have adhesive properties. In examples, (1) commercial triethanolamine is condensed with adipic acid to give a product soluble in alcohol which on further heating is converted into an insoluble gummy elastic and gelatinous material. (2) Triethanolamine is heated with phthalic anhydride. (3) Diethanolamine is heated with citric acid. (4) Triethanolamine is heated with a mixture of succinic acid and phthalic acid anhydride. (5) A mixture of mono- and diethanolamine is heated with adipic acid. (6) A mixture of technical triethanolamine and glycerol is heated with a mixture of phthalic acid anhydride is heated with a mixture of a polyglycerol (corresponding to diglycerol) and tributanolamine. (8) Phthalic acid anhydride is heated with diethylmonoglycerolamine.ALSO:Condensation products of polycarboxylic acids or anhydrides, such as phthalic acid, phthalic anhydride, adipic acid, sebacic acid, citric acid, benzophenone dicarboxylic acid, and succinic acid and its homologues, and alcoholamines, such as mono-, di-, and triethanolamine, and glycerolamines, with or without the addition of polyhydric alcohols such as glycerol are suitable for vulcanization accelerators.
