Abstract
Carboxylic acid esters of aromatic sulphodicarboxylic acids are obtained by treating one molar proportion of the said aromatic acids, their anhydrides or sulphonic acid salts with one molar proportion of an alcohol having at least 16 carbon atoms, and then treating the resulting monoester with an alcohol having at least 8 carbon atoms, the esterification being effected at 80-90 DEG C. with reduced pressure in the presence of a solvent forming an azeotropic mixture with water. In a modification, the lower alcohol is used first. The products or their salts with metals, ammonia or amines are used as wetting, emulsifying, softening, cleansing and levelling agents in the textile industry. In examples: (1) a mixture of octadecyl alcohol with a little cetyl alcohol is esterified with 4-sulphophthalic anhydride and the product reacted in benzene with 2-ethylhexanol-1 and neutralized; the resulting diester is used with 4-sulphophthalic-21-ethylhexyl-21-ethylbutyl ester for emulsifying oleic acid; (2) the monoester obtained in the first stage of example (1) is esterified with a mixture containing oleic alcohol and a little cetyl alcohol and neutralized with ammonia; the resulting diester in conjunction with 4-sulphophthalic acid 21-ethylhexyl-21-ethylbutyl ester and diethylene glycolmonoethylether is used for emulsifying oleic acid; (3) 4-sulphophthalicanhydride is esterified first with a mixture of oleic alcohol and cetyl alcohol and then with diethylene glycolmonobutylether. The Specification as open to inspection under Sect. 91 comprises also the use of the halides and esters of the sulphodicarboxylic acids for the esterification, and one carboxylic group may be esterified with an alcohol containing at least 12 carbon atoms and the other with phenols or alcohols containing at least six carbon atoms. This subject-matter does not appear in the Specification as accepted.
