Apparatus for determining the height of part of a column as a percentage of the full height comprises a flat member 1 bearing part of a right-angled triangle, 3, 4, 5, the base 5 having a scale, preferably of one hundred divisions, a member 12 adapted, e.g., by a groove 13, to carry a specimen tube parallel to the base and being slidable towards and away from it, and an arm 6 bearing a line 9 movable about a point corresponding with the apex of the triangle. In use, to determine, e.g. the percentage of solid matter in the lower part of a tube containing liquid, the member 12 is set so that the full height of the column just extends between the lines 3, 4, and the arm 6 is set so that the line 9 intersects the interface between the liquid and solid contents, whereupon the required percentage can be read from the base scale. The arm 6 has an arcuate end which moves round an arcuate guide 7, and a knob 11 extends through a slot 10 in the member 1.
