596,155. Indicating yarn denier. BRITISH CELANESE, Ltd. July 23, 1945, No. 18805. Convention date, Aug. 2, 1944. [Class 40 (i)] The denier of a travelling yarn is measured and recorded by passing the yarn through a U tube 2 containing a conducting liquid and measuring the resistance of the liquid between spaced points along the tube, preferably by means of a self-balancing bridge which records the resistance variations or the corresponding denier. The glass tube 2 is preferably filled with mercury which extends into funnel-shaped reservoirs 3, 4 at the tube ends into which contacts 5, 6 dip. The bridge' is fed from a D.C. source 7 adjustable at 11 and includes equal ratio arms 21, 22 and in the comparison arm 19, zeroizing resistors 33, 34 in parallel with a resistance 10 automatically adjusted in known manner by movement of the indicator of the galvanometer 28 to balance the bridge. The arm 38 adjusting the resistance 10 also operates a pen 39 to record the resistance values or the corresponding denier on a chart 41 mounted on a drum driven by a motor or clockwork. The whole device may be mounted in a portable cabinet.
