A device for use in measuring gradients comprises a generally rectangular elongated body having a flat lower surface and a concave upper surface formed as an arc of a circle, and preferably having a radius of 57.296 inches, so that on placing the flat lower surface on the gradient to be measured, and moving a bubble level, which is short in length compared with the elongated body, along the concave surface until the bubble level is horizontal, the gradient can be read directly from the position of index marks on the bubble level, relative to a scale on the elongated body.
