Abstract
849,253. Valves. UNITED KINGDOM ATOMIC ENERGY AUTHORITY. Sept. 2, 1958 [Sept. 10, 1957], No. 28569/57. Class 135. The body 1 of a vacuum control valve incorporates an annular trough 4 containing a soft low-melting point metal 13 e.g. indium or an indium-gallium alloy forming a seat for a sharp-edged closure member 5 connected by a loose joint 7 to a rod 8 attached to the boss 9 of a circular plate 10. A metal bellows 11 is fixed to the plate 10 and another circular plate 12, which latter is sealed to the body 1 by a threaded ring 14 and a metal " O " ring 15; the ring 14 also fastens a cylinder 17 to the body 1, on which cylinder 17 is threaded a knurled cap 18 having a central opening that accommodates the boss 9 which is provided with a circlip. The closure movement is controlled by rotation of the cap 18. An electric heating element 20 is disposed around the trough to enable the metal 13 to be melted, thereby renewing the surface of the valve seat.
