Abstract

848,939. Root crop harvesters. VAN DER LELY N. V., C. Nov. 6, 1956 [Nov. 7, 1955], No. 8918/60. Divided out of 848,938. Class 6(3). A root crop harvester comprises a tractor-drawn frame on which are pivotally mounted beams 98 and 107, the beams supporting at their free ends wheels 96 and 105 respectively, the wheels being driven to rotate in opposite directions from the power take-off of the tractor, and being provided with platelike projections 97 for gripping the roots and releasing them from the ground as the machine advances. The velocity ratios of the transmission systems to the two wheels are preferably chosen so that the wheels rotate at different speeds, thereby rotating the roots about their longitudinal and stripping off some of the adhering soil. The wheels are urged towards each other by a spring 117. The machine further comprises two wheels 110, 111 mounted at the free ends of beams 108 and 109 respectively, which are pivoted to the frame and urged towards each other by a spring 114, the wheels lifting the freed roots from the ground and transporting them to conveyors 115 and 11b. The wheels 110 and 111 are preferably inclined to the vertical, and may either be freely rotatable so as to be rotated by their contact with the ground, or may be driven from the power take-off of the tractor.
