743,684. Harvesting root-crops. OPPEL, H. C. May 20,1953 [Oct. 10, 1952], No. 14185/53. Class 6 (3). A beet-harvester, of the type wherein cooperating mutually-inclined skeleton wheels 10, 11 enter the ground to grip the beets and to eject them from the ground on to a conveyer 17, is characterized in that the wheels are resiliently mounted relatively to their hubs 21, 22 so that they can yield slightly on accidentally gripping rocks. The hubs rotate freely on shafts 15, 16 mounted on a bracket 14 on the frame of the machine and are held on the shafts by nuts 25, 26 passing through clearance holes in the wheels. The beet-gripping fingers 20 are integral with the recessed centre portions 23 of the wheels, each of which is held in contact with its hub by bolts 27 passing through a spring plate 28, the portion 23 being tapered towards its centre to enable it to rock slightly should an unyielding object be gripped by the fingers 20. The fingers 20 taper towards their tips and have sharp chisel-like ends for cutting trash.
