Abstract
848,094. Door latches. HALLAM, SLEIGH & CHESTON Ltd. May 16,1958 [May 20,1957], No. 15878/57. Class 44. A vehicle door comprises a spring-loaded latch 1 pivoted at 5 to a shallow casing 7 and having a notch for engagement with a striker pin 2, e.g., on a door pillar, and a two-armed, spring- loaded detent 3 which is pivoted to the casing 7 at 6 and is operable from inside and outside the vehicle respectively by a lever 9 which is connected to an interior door handle, not shown, and a push-button slide 8. The latter is slidable in a shallow recess in the casing 7 and carries a pin 29 for engaging the detent 3. The latch 1 moved by the striker pin 2 into the door holding position as the door closes is held by the detent 3 which is first lifted as the end 28 of an arm 1a on the latch traverses a curved edge 27 on the detent and then snaps back behind the detent arm 1a. The interior handle is linked by a rod to the lever 9 which has an arm 12 with a bent over end 11 for engaging the detent 3 to lift it out of engagement with the latch 1 when the lever 9 is rotated in a clockwise direction as shown in Fig. 2, so that the door can be opened. The lever 9 also carries a laterally bent lug 13 which is moved behind to block the slide 8 when the lever 9 is rotated in the opposite direction by a lever 17 which is pivoted to a side wing 10 of the casing 7 and is operable by means of a rod 18 passing up through, e.g. through the waist rail, of the vehicle door. The lug 13 carries a cross-pin 14 which projects through a vertical slot in the casing 7 for engagement with a notch 23 in one arm of a three-armed lever which is pivoted at 19 to the back of the casing and has a depending arm 20 loaded by a toggle-spring 30. An arm 22 of the three-armed lever projects outwardly beyond the casing adjacent the push button and is operable by a key turning a rotary barrel-type lock 24 to move the lug 13 into and out of a locking position behind the slide 8. Should the blocking lug 13 be moved inadvertently into a blocking position when the door is open the lug 13 is moved clear by the action of the closing door, a projection 26 on the rear face of the lever 3 lifting the lug 13 from behind the slide when the detent is moved angularly as the striker pin 2 engages the latch 1. The projection 26 drops out of engagement with the lug 13 as the detent 3 snaps back into the latch locking position. A lock is intended to be fitted to each of the front doors of a vehicle. Specifications 680,069 and 792,189 are referred to.
