In a heating and ventilating system for a motor vehicle, an enclosed body 9 from which the air intake 13 of the engine 1 is arranged to extract air, so long as heating is required, is maintained substantially sealed against ingress of air except for an inlet 8 through which heated replacement air is induced to flow continuously because of the suction of the engine (Fig. 1). This air passes through the hottest zone 4 of the gilledtube radiator 2 in the liquid-cooling system of the front engine 1 and the duct 7, its supply and distribution in the body 9 being controlled by flap 16, 17 and 10, whereby the duct 7 is closed, the intake 13 is shut off from the body 9 and an intake 18 is opened to the engine compartment when heating is not required, the supply of heated air then entering the compartment through a duct 19 opened to the chamber 6. Heated air can be admitted to windscreen-demisting nozzles 12 through a pipe 11 adjacent the valve 10. With a liquid-cooled rear engine 20 (Fig. 2) the impulsion of the air through the heating zone is assisted by the action of an engine-driven fan 22, the air passing from a chamber 25 into a duct 29 leading to the vehicle body, although some or all may pass through demisting nozzles, the engine,drawing air from the interior 26 through a duct 27 and cleaner 28. When heated air is not required a valve 30 closes the duct 27, and the cleaner 28, receiving air through louvres 23, communicates with the engine compartment, a valve 31 shutting off the air to the duct 29 and diverting it to outlet louvres.
