Abstract
1,143,989. Ventilating vehicles. DR.-ING. h.c.F. PORSCHE K.G. 25 July, 1967 [29 July, 1966], No. 34185/67. Heading F4V. [Also in Division F1] A fan in a vehicle heating system has means for varying the effective propelling area of the fan blades so that the volume of heated air supplied to the passenger compartment can be increased at low engine speeds. As shown, the radial flow fan 3 includes blades 28 and discharges air into a heating conduit 6 and into manifold 5 for cooling the engine. Conduit 6 supplies two further conduits 14 (one of which is shown) which embrace the vehicle exhaust pipes 10 and include flap valves 17 controlling the relative proportion of air supplied to the passenger compartment and, through a bleed opening 18, to atmosphere. The fan includes an axially movable shroud 26 which is acted on from one side by a lever 32 through the intermediary of a spring 34, and from the other side by a centrifugal governor (Fig. 3, not shown). The lever 32 and valves 17 are manually actuated through a common linkage so that as the valves are opened, the shroud 26 moves to the right to increase the effective width of the blades 28. Increasing engine speeds cause the governor to move the shroud to the left against the action of the spring 34. The engine may be liquid cooled and the fan casing, rather than a shroud plate, may be moved axially to vary the blade width.
