Abstract

767,116. Ventilating vehicles. VAUXHALL MOTORS, Ltd. Feb. 2, 1955 [Feb. 9, .1954], No. 3734/54. Class 137 Apparatus for ventilating and heating the interior of a vehicle comprises a casing 1 which is fixed to the dash panel beneath the engine bonnet and has a fresh air intake 4 controlled by a butterfly valve 5, a flap valve 7, hinged to the upper edge of a heating element 6 accommodated in the rear part of the casing, apportioning, in the desired ratio, the air flow passing through the heating element 6 and/or along a by-pass 6a above it. Upstream of the heating element 6 the casing is divided, by a partition 8, into upper and lower chambers 9, 10 which intercommunicate by way of an opening 11 adjacent the heater 6. The chamber 10, containing a centrifugal fan 12, forms a r.e-circulation air duct which has an opening 13 which communicates with the car interior and is controlled by a flap valve 14. The air from the casing is delivered to the car interior through a manifold 3 which extends across the dash panel and has a main delivery opening opposite the driver's seat, smaller delivery openings.at each end (riot shown) and a transverse duct at the top -having openings 32 for directing warm air across the windscreen surface. The apparatus is controlled by two hand levers 16, 20, Figs. 8, 9, the lever 16 being connected to the air inlet control valve 5 which is urged shut by a spring 17. Movement of the lever 16 slightly beyond the shut position operates a spring-pressed button switch 19 which starts the electric motor 15 of the fan 12, the suction of which opens the valve 14 to draw in recirculation air. The heater 6 is controlled by the heat lever 20 which also 'controls the apportioning valve 7, the latter of course being ineffective when the valve 5 is shut and the fan 12 is running. The heat lever 20, connected to the valve 7 by a cable 21, and a spring-loaded lever (not shown) also indirectly controls a spring- loaded valve (not shown) which regulates the flow of engine coolant through the heater 6, a pin 23 on the lever 20 engaging a pivoted arm 24 which is connected by a cable 25 to the water valve. The lever 20 is capable of moving the valve 7 between two extreme positions A and C, the pressure of the pin 23 on the arm 24 being relieved between the extreme position A and an intermediate position B to open the water valve and permit the flow of hot water into the heater 6. To ensure the setting of the two hand levers 16 and 20 each lever carries a toothed quadrant which is engaged by a spring-pressed detent (not shown)-
