Abstract

654,220. Radiators for motor vehicles; heating air. CLAYTON DEWANDRE CO., Ltd., EDGE, S. H., and DOBIE, A. Dec. 31, 1948, No. 33665. [Class 64(iii)] [Also in Group X] Relates to means for heating a vehicle by introducing air, heated by passage through an engine-coolant radiator, for internal heating or de-misting of the windscreen. According to the invention, in such heating means in which the radiator is divided into primary and secondary sections 2, 3 with an air chamber 14 and duct 15 collecting air from the primary section, the inlet header of the radiator is divided into two compartments 6, 7 the coolant inlet 11 being connected to the compartment 7 associated with the primary section 2 for constant coolant flow therethrough and the flow into the other compartment 6 and the secondary section 3 being controlled by a thermal valve 8. When hot enough, the thermal valve 8 exposes an aperture in a partition 5 between the header compartments. A shroud of U-section extends into the radiator core and forms the air-collecting chamber 14 from which the duct 15 leads the air to a louvred distributer and a windscreen de-mister in the vehicle. A fan or blower 22, Fig. 5 may be included in this air system for increasing pressure. When applied to an omnibus, see Fig. 5, conduits 23 conduct the air through the sides and/or beneath the floor of the vehicle to spaced outlets 24 in the vehicle interior.
