Abstract

896,340. Vehicle ventilators. SMITH & SONS (ENGLAND) Ltd., S. Sept. 5, 1958 [Sept. 5, 1957], No. 28072/57. Class 137 A vehicle heater and ventilator comprises a housing which acts as an air intake and distributer from which air may be passed direct to the interior of the vehicle or part or all may be passed over a heat-exchanger heated by coolant from the engine, provision also being made to pass some or all of the air to the windscreen either directly or after heating. As shown, air is passed into the inlet chamber 4 either from an air scoop and duct 67 or by a fan (not shown) and may be either passed directly to the vehicle interior through the port 13 in the wall 3, duct 65 and ports 17 and 66, the port 14 in wall 2 being closed by the flap valve 15, or the air may be heated by closing the port 13 by flap 15 when the air passes over the heat exchanger 11. Intermediate positions of the flap 15 produce a mixture of heated and unheated air. By closing ports 13 and 17 with flaps 15 and 35 respectively and opening ports 19 and/or 20 by operation of flaps 21 and 22, air, either heated or unheated or mixed, may be passed to the windscreen through outlet 25. The flap valves are linked to an operating mechanism mounted on the dashboard which will automatically close port 17 when all the air flow is desired for demisting (air unheated, port 14 closed), or defrosting (air heated, port 13 closed). Intermediate settings are also possible allowing air to reach the interior of the vehicle and the windscreen simultaneously.
