Abstract

A pressure vessel has a part of its wall formed as a deep box grid sealed by a membrane through which pass pipes for access to the vessel. One end of a vessel 1 is formed of a box grid 10 and a membrane 4 through which pass control rod and fuel loading tubes 3. The vessel rests on a flange inside concrete biological shielding 9 through which pass coolant ducts 15. The access pipes themselves could be used as members in the box grid, being joined by deep webs.
