Abstract
860,190. Nuclear reactors. A.E.I.-J. THOMPSON NUCLEAR ENERGY CO. Ltd. June 18, 1958 [June 26, 1957], No. 20187/57. Class 39(4). A vessel to contain high fluid pressures has cylindrical side walls 1 continuous with hemispherical end. walls 2, 2<SP>1</SP> and may contain a support grid 4 for a reactor core The side wall is reinforced by one or more layers of external banding 3, comprising wide bands covering most of the wall or a number of narrow bands side by side. The ends of the bands are joined so that the bands do not adhere to the wall of the vessel, for example (Fig. 10) by undercutting the ends 22 and inserting a backing plate 21 before welding. Near the ends of the vessel the bands may be graded in width (Fig. 3). Ducting such as coolant ducts 5 and fuel charging pipes 6 is preferably taken through the ends of the vessel; side ducting can be taken through a coupling plate 18 to which the bands are joined (Fig. 6).
