Abstract
1,202,920. Reactors. JAPAN ATOMIC ENERGY RESEARCH INSTITUTE. 22 Dec., 1967 [23 Dec., 1966; 6 Feb., 1967], No. 58395/67. Heading G6C. A fast breeder reactor employing liquid sodium coolant 8 comprises a plurality of fuel assemblies 1 disposed in a vessel closed by a removable cover 6. A box 3 secured to the cover 6 by struts 5 carries hollow coupling members 4 to which the hollow heads 2 of the assemblies 1 are detachably connected. Fission product gases generated in the fuel element cans 9 of each assembly 1 are directed by pipes 10 to the head 2 and then pass by way of the respective coupling member 4, box 3 and a pipe 7 to the exterior of the reactor. The gas passage through each coupling member 4 and head 2 contains a ball valve (Fig. 3, not shown) the two valves being opened upon insertion of the head into the coupling member and being closed by springs when the number and head are separated. For refuelling, the cover 6 together with box 3 and coupling members 4 are removed.
