Abstract

1,063,683. Cooling reactors. ATOMIC ENERGY OF CANADA Ltd. June 24, 1965 [Aug. 31, 1964], No. 26871/65. Heading G6C. In a nuclear reactor power plant, light water coolant is boiled in pressurized fuel tubes surrounded by a heavy water moderator in a calandria tank. The steam-water mixture leaving the reactor passes through a separator, from which water is returned to the reactor and the steam fed directly to a turbine. Each pressure tube may contain either a number of separate fuel elements over which the coolant flows or a single column of fuel in each tube may be provided with a number of channels through which the light water flows. Uranium metal or oxide may be. used and a coolant gas flow can be provided between the fuel and the pressure tube. In each pressure tube the crosssectional area of the fuel is at least twice that of the remaining space in the tube.
