In a nuclear reactor pressure vessel, 1, the standpipe 4 is welded into a substantially elliptical aperture in the vessel. The upper and lower edges 7, 8 of the aperture abut against the tapered surfaces 5, 6 of the pipe 4 and the edges are chamfered to conform to the pipe surface to provide a welding surface.
