Abstract

845,305. Nuclear reactors. UNITED KING- DOM ATOMIC ENERGY AUTHORITY. July 1, 1958 [July 1, 1957], No. 20778/57. Class 39(4). A cylindrical reactor pressure vessel with its axis vertical is supported at its lower end from a structure in a movable body such as a ship and carries at its top end shielding which is free to move axially but not to tilt. The pressure vessel 1 is supported by a perforated skirt 2 inside a thermal shield 5 and a concrete biological shield 6 carried by a support structure 3. The top of the vessel carries a skirt 7 containing thermal and biological shielding, restrained from tilting by a ring 24 of concrete shielding. The vessel contains a cone structure on a grid 33 supported by a perforated skirt 31 and carries lagging 15. Charging tubes 11, control rod tubes 14, and lagged coolant ducts 12, 13 pass through the shielding into the vessel.
