Abstract
845,412. Electron multipliers. SIEMENS EDISON SWAN Ltd. July 4, 1957 [July 18, 1956], No. 22256/56. Class 39(1). A photo-multiplier tube using secondary electron emissive dynodes has the cathode K so shaped that the emitted electrons have a focus point O and the first dynode D 1 having a contour which is substantially part of the surface of revolution of a curve of the form r = r o exp. (α#), i.e. a logarithmic spiral, about an axis X-X<SP>1</SP> perpendicular to the axis Y-Y<SP>1</SP> of the electron beam and passing through the focus point O, the origin of generation of the logarithmic spiral substantially coinciding with the focus point O. With this construction all the electron trojectories will intersect the dynode D 1 at a constant angle. The focus point O may be on the far side of D 1 and thus imaginary, the dynode D<SP>1</SP> then presenting a convex surface to the electron beam. The beam can pass through apertured plates maintained at suitable potentials so that the focus point O can lie at a suitable distance from the dynode D<SP>1</SP>.
