Abstract

A road-making material is prepared by impregnating in the presence of air a finely divided filler, e.g. rock dust, ground slay, ground clinker, cement and hydraulic lime, with an aqueous emulsion of a mixture of hydrocarbons, the emulsion containing between 10 and 20% by weight of water glass, and mixing the impregnated filler material with a bituminous mix, e.g. granite chippings or sand bonded by bitumen. Mixtures of hydrocarbons are exemplified by those obtained as by-products in petroleum distillation or in the gasification or carbonization of mineral coal, e.g. bitumen, bitumen flux oil, heavy oil, gas oil kerosene, petrol, tar and tar oils. Mixtures of these by-products may be employed. Tall oil is preferably included as an emulsifier. The water glass not only stabilizes the emulsion but is said to react with carbon dioxide in the air to produce a wear-resistant coating of silicic acid on the particles of filler. The components of the emulsion may be mixed at between 60 DEG C and 70 DEG C and preferably form between 5 and 15% by weight of the impregnated filler.
