A constriction 13 on one or both sides of a duct 4 leading to an overhead inlet valve 3 of an air-compressing fuel-injection engine divides the induced or forced air stream into a component 15, which is whirled in a coned helical valve chamber 8 of decreasing pitch and a component 14 which passes straight into the cylinder and entrains the whirled component 15. The duct is at about 40 degrees or less to the vertical.
