[Also in Groups XVIII, XXIX and XXXVI] The hydraulic operating- mechanism of a circuitbreaker is provided with a calibrated speed - limiting orifice to restrict the flow of liquid to or from an hydraulic jack so that after a high initial acceleration of the moving contact the speed of the contact is limited to a substantially constant optimum value. In Fig. 2, the moving contact (not shown) is closed by a single-acting jack when a valve 17 is opened to supply liquid from an hydraulic accumulator 11 through a sharpedged orifice 24 to the cylinder 7 of the jack, the orifice restricting the flow of liquid under pressure. The moving contact is opened by a spring 10 when a valve 21 is opened to exhaust the cylinder 7 to a reservoir 13, the flow of liquid from the cylinder being restricted by a sharpedged orifice 25. Non-return valves may be associated with the orifices so that a single conduit may be used both for the supply of liquid to and the exhausting of the liquid from the cylinder, Fig. 5 (not shown). In Fig. 10 the moving contact is operated by a double-acting jack 40, 41, calibrated orifices 51, 52 being provided in " non-return " valves 53, 54 arranged so that the supply of liquid to one or other side of the piston 41 is not restricted, but the exhaust from the opposite side of the piston is restricted. In another arrangement, Figs. 15 and 16 (not shown), a double-acting jack has one side of the piston permanently supplied from an hydraulic accumulator, the supply to and the delivery from the other side of the piston being restricted by sharp-edged orifices. In further arrangements, only the supply to or delivery from a single-acting jack or from one side of a doubleacting jack is restricted. Contact members for switches.-The axiallymovable contact-rod 1 co-operates with a fixed " tulip " type contact formed by shoe-like members 122 carried on rods mounted in fixed supports and biased by compression-springs 123.
