Abstract

738,150. Hydraulic machines; accumulators. ALLIS-CHALMERS MANUFACTURING CO. Dec. 22, 1953 [Jan. 13, 1953], No. 35642/53. Class 69 (2). [Also in Group XXXVII] A hydraulic operating mechanism for an electric circuit-breaker (see Group XXXVII) has a fluid motor 13 supplied through valve means from a pneumo-hydraulic accumulator 50. When the solenoid 68 of a pilot valve 63 is energized, valve elements 66, 67 move upwardly and permit liquid under pressure to flow from accumulator 50 through pipes 75, 76 and 77 to control valve 64, the stem and elements 70 ... 72 of which are moved to the left. Liquid can now flow through pipes 75, 78 and 79 to the cylinder 7 below the piston 8 which moves upwardly, the liquid above the piston escaping through pipes 80, 81 to a reservoir 60. When the closing operation is completed, the solenoid 68 is de-energized and the valve 63 returns to the position shown in which liquid is supplied through pipes 75, 76 and 82 to the valve 64 so that its elements are moved to the right. Pressure liquid is now supplied through pipes 75, 78 and 80 to the cylinder 7 above the piston 8 which moves back to its lower position, the liquid below the piston escaping through-pipes 79, 85 and 81. The accumulator 50 has a rubber bladder 53 charged with nitrogen to approximately two-thirds of the system operating pressure; extrusion of the bladder from the shell 51 being prevented by a poppet valve 56 when. the liquid has been completely expelled from the shell 51. The accumulator is charged with pressure liquid by a power-driven pump 62 or by a hand pump 61, the latter enabling the system to be used as a hydraulic jack for maintenance operations.
