Abstract

1421839 Percussive tools IMPULSE PRODUCTS CORP 29 June 1973 [10 Aug 1972] 31039/73 Heading B4C In a fluid powered device such as an impact ram 10, the control for operating the plunger 16 of the ram comprises a valve arrangement operative in response to the admittance of pressure fluid to cause a portion 72 of the housing 14 to become charged to a predetermined pressure level, operative to hold a triggering chamber 36 open to venting via passages 50, 52 and 54 until the predetermined pressure is reached, and operative to close off the venting and direct the pressure fluid from the housing portion to the triggering chamber when the predetermined pressure is reached to cause movement of the plunger. As shown, hydraulic fluid admitted via a port 66 to the housing portion 72 acts on a piston 18 to compress gas contained in a chamber 20 of the plunger 16. While the piston 18 moves down a poppet valve 48 is in its lower position to vent the triggering chamber 36 to the passage 54, Fig. 2 (not shown). The housing portion 72 becomes charged to the predetermined pressure during the downward movement of the piston 18 and when lateral ports 64 in a hollow piston probe 38 are exposed below a housing part 42, Fig. 3 (not shown) the hydraulic fluid passes through the ports to lift and seat the poppet valve 48 into its vent closing position and to pass through ports 62 into the triggering chamber 36 and act on the end surface 32 of the plunger 16 to drive the latter on its working stroke. To ensure continuous recycling the underside of the housing part 42 has projecting pins (110) Figs. 7 to 9 (not shown) which contact the piston (18) on its return stroke and cause a floating ring (28) to break sealing contact at (A) with the piston and make sealing contact at (B) with a seat (44) of the housing part (42). A fitting 24 is used to charge the required amount of gas in the chamber 20. In a second embodiment, Figs. 4 to 6 (not shown) a pipe (80) is connected to the vent outlet for hydraulic fluid, the housing portion (72<SP>1</SP>) is charged through a pipe (84) and passages (86, 76), the lateral ports (64) are provided in the poppet valve (48<SP>1</SP>) instead of in the piston probe (38<SP>1</SP>) and relieved surfaces (88, 90 and 92) define an annular passage about the piston probe to communicate the housing portion (72<SP>1</SP>) with the ports (64).
