840,752. Jointing by stamping; corrugating. KEMP, C. F. Aug. 30, 1957 [Sept. 4, 1956], No. 27395/57. Class 83 (4). A joining tool for making a joint between a metal tube and an object engaged therein comprises a frame 10, a pair of follower rolling wheels 14 and a thrust rolling wheel 30 mounted on the frame, the follower and thrust rolling wheels being tapered to rounded edges and rotatable about parallel axes perpendicular to a plane through the peripheries of the wheels and the axis of the thrust rolling wheel being equidistant from those of the follower rolling wheels and means for moving the thrust rolling wheel towards the follower rolling wheels such that pressure is exerted on a metal tube engaged between the wheels so that when the frame is oscillated about the tube an annular indentation is made in the tube to restrict the bore of the tube. The frame 10 includes a partly tapped sleeve 11 and a hooked bracket 12 having housings 13 to accommodate the follower rolling wheels 14. Threadedly engaged in the sleeve 11 is a spindle 18 provided with a handle 19 at one end and a collar 20 at the other, said collar being fixed above a reduced portion which engages in an axial bore in the stem 22 of a thrust wheel carrier 23 which is non-rotatably slidable in the lower portion of the sleeve 11. A thrust ball bearing 26 is positioned in the bottom of the axial bore in the stem 22. The tool may be used to form a sleeve joint to connect a pair of metal tubes 33 by means of a galvanized iron sleeve 32 (Fig. 2). Lubricant is added as the indentation 34 is deepened by tightening the rolling wheel 30. Figs. 4 and 5 show joints made by the tool and Fig. 6 shows a metal sleeve 41 joining two plastic or hard rubber tubes 43. Alternatively, two metal tubes may be joined together by placing another metal tube or rod into the ends of the tubes and forming an annular indentation in each tube as hitherto.
