Abstract

871,052. Rotary joints. J. R. H. PRODUCTS & CO. Ltd. Feb. 11, 1960 [Feb. 13, 1959; July 8, 1959], Nos. 5133/59 and 23474/59. Class 99(1). In a rotary pipe coupling a pipe 10 is fitted within a pipe 11 over a length at least equal to the outer diameter of the pipe 10 and a ball race 16 is mounted in an annular groove in the outer surface of the pipe 10 by steel collars 17, 18 which surround the pipe 10 and are relatively rotatable in relation thereto and are capable of retaining the balls, the collar 18 being connected to a flange 21 on the pipe 11 by bolts 20 and the collars 17, 18 being secured together by screws 22. As shown, a U-shaped packing ring 26 acted upon by fluid-pressure is located in a groove in the pipe 10. The ball race 16 is supplied with lubricant fed through a nozzle 30 and through helical grooves 27 cut in the outer surface of the pipe 10. Alternatively, the grooves are cut in the inner surface of the pipe 11. In a modification the nozzle 30 feeds lubricant to a radial channel leading to the ball race and the helical grooves are dispensed with. A steel liner coated on its inner surface with polytetrafluoroethylene containing molybdenum disulphide is located in a recess provided in the inner surface of the pipe 11 and extends along the length of the projection of the pipe 10 in the pipe 11.
