A circuit for producing flashes of light of prolonged duration from a cold cathode electric discharge lamp 1 having a trigger electrode 7 comprises at least three inductances 3 in series between a supply terminal and one main electrode, and a capacitor connected between the supply end of each inductor and the other supply terminal. The lamp is fired by a trigger circuit 8-11 connected between cathode 6 and the trigger electrode 7. A resistor 4 may be connected in series with the inductances, which may be wound on a common core.
