Class 112 [Also in Group XXXIV] In a sewing machine having a lubricant reservoir 42 from which oil is gravity-fed through conduits 40, 41 to a looper 19, a valve 30 disposed between conduits 40 and 41 automatically controls the flow of oil in accordance with the speed of the machine. The valve 30 consists of a bore 31 in which a spring-pressed piston 32 is located. The end of the bore 31 is in communication with the outlet 29 from and oil pump 21 and when the machine is inoperative a spring 33 maintains the piston 32 in a position where it cuts off communication between conduits 40 and 41, and pump outlet 29 and a delivery conduit 46 respectively. On starting the machine, the pump 21 sucks oil out of the head 4, or out of an oil container 27, and delivers it through outlet 29 thereby forcing the piston 32 to the left. An annular groove 36 in the piston 32 establishes communication between the conduits 40 and 41. The oil under pressure passes through conduit 46 to lubricate upper members of the driving mechanism. In a modification the valve 30 may be operated by a centrifugal governor.
