Abstract

720,343. Engine stop-gear. HARRIS, J. Aug. 19, 1953 [Aug. 21, 1952], No. 20987/52. Class 122 (4). [Also in Group XXXIV] In a lubrication system for an engine or other machine an oil pump driven by a moving part of the machine delivers oil in excess of requirements into one end of a pressure cylinder from which the oil is fed to sight drip feed or other lubricators and a spring-loaded piston in the cylinder is adapted to be displaced by the oil to uncover one or more overflow ports so long as the oil supply pressure is maintained by the pump at a pressure determined by the loading on the piston, failure of the oil supply from the pump allowing the spring to move the piston to close the overflow ports and operate a warning device and/or stop the machine. A cylinder 10, Fig. 1, is provided with a non-return valve 11 through which oil is delivered by a pump 12 drawing oil from a reservoir surrounding the cylinder. Some of the oil is discharged through a pipe 14 to drip feed lubricators, and excess oil forces upwardly a spring-pressed piston 15 until overflow ports 19 are uncovered. The piston has a piston-rod 17 which is adapted to control the operation of a warning device and/or means fer stopping the engine. The rod projects through a gland nut 37, Fig. 2, on the cover of the reservoir 20 for engagement with a lever 34 pivotally mounted at 35 on the cover. The outlet from the pressure cylinder in the reservoir 20 is provided with a cock 26 which may be turned downwards to connect the cylinder with a channel 28 feeding drip lubricators 29, or turned upwards to connect the cylinder with a hand pump so that the cylinder can be filled with oil before the machine is started. As the piston rises in the cylinder the piston-rod raises one end of the lever against the action of a spring 42 and lowers the other end so that a tappet 45 opens a valve 46 controlling fuel supply to the engine. At the same time a lever 48 is raised, whereby the cranked end 25 thereof is drawn away from the path of a pivoted striker 24 mounted on a pulley 22 which serves to drive the pump in the reservoir 20. If the pressure in the cylinder is reduced the piston-rod is lowered allowing the end 25 to obstruct the striker, causing it to strike a warning bell 23. Further downward movement of the piston-rod allows the tappet 45 to be disengaged from the valve 46, so that the valve closes and the machine is stopped.
