A reversible metering valve device comprises a housing having first and second flow ports communicating with a bore of the housing, a check valve carried in a hollow cartridge which is reversibly positioned in the bore and registers with the first and second ports so that flow through the cartridge between these ports is checked alternatively in one or the opposite flow direction by reversing the cartridge end for end, and an adjustable by-pass restriction connected between the first and second ports and effective to provide a metered flow through the device in the direction in which the flow is otherwise checked by the check valve. As shown, the invention is applied to the operation of a spring-loaded piston 14 requiring to be given slow outward and quick return strokes or vice versa for the operation of a main valve (not shown). The device 10 comprises a head or housing 11 bolted to a cylinder 13 of the main valve and having a first port 18 for connection to a source of operating pressure or to exhaust and a second port 19 which registers with a port 20 of the cylinder 13. These ports communicate with a bore 23 of the housing in which a hollow cartridge 26 carrying a ball check valve 48 is reversibly mounted. Ports 49, 53 of the cartridge on opposite sides of the check valve register, as shown in Fig. 2, and also when the cartridge is turned end for end, with the first and second ports 18, 19 so that the valve operates to check flow in the chosen direction between these ports and permit a free flow in the reverse direction. A by-pass orifice 35 connected between the ports 18 and 19 and adjustable by a tapered needle 36 is effective to provide the restricted metered flow through the device in the direction in which the flow is otherwise prevented by the check valve, i.e. corresponding to a slow outward or alternatively a slow return stroke of the piston 14, the complementary stroke in either case being a rapid one. The cartridge is sealed in the bore by three sealing rings 42 and retained by a set screw 54.
