Abstract

981,959. Power-assisted steering. R. H. SHEPPARD. Feb. 15, 1963, No. 6274/63. Heading B7H. In a power steering mechanism comprising; a fluid distributing valve 48 in threaded engagement with a steering shaft 60 and mounted with limited axial movement within a piston 35 working in a bore 11 within a housing 10, valves 79 are provided to release the fluid pressure acting on the piston before the piston completes its stroke in either direction. When rotation of the shaft 60 displaces the valve 48 fluid supplied by a pump through an inlet 20, a groove 22 in the piston 35 and a port 45 is directed by the valve 48 through either of passages 90, 91 (Fig. 3) in the piston to one of chambers 70, 74 at opposite ends of the piston, the other chamber 74 or 70 being connected by the valve 48 to one of ports 53, 97 communicating with an exit port 56. Before the piston 35 reaches the end of its travel one of the valves 79 is unseated by one of adjustable plungers 84 whereby the incoming fluid flowing through the port 45 flows via the low-pressure side of the piston 35 to the exit port 56. Although power movement of the piston 35 is so limited the piston stroke can be completed manually by rotation of the shaft 60. An axial passageway 71 and slots 72, 73 in the valve 48 equalize fluid pressure on opposite sides thereof, and spring washers 47 urge the valve 48 into mid-position to provide " feel." A pin screwed into the housing 10 projects into the bore 11 and carries a roller engaging a slot in the piston 35 to prevent rotation in the bore, and a further pin screwed into the piston 35 prevents rotation of the valve 48. Rack teeth 18 on the piston 35 mesh with a gear 30 splined to an .output shaft 25.
