Abstract

621,974. Fluid-actuated valves. METAL VENTS, Ltd., and ZWICKY, J. F. Nov. 15, 1945, Nos. 33971/46 (divided out of 621,952) and 33972/46. [Class 135] In a multiway piston valve the piston is biassed by a spring or gravity to one end position and moved in the opposite direction by the pressure of actuating fluid, so as to take up definite positions corresponding to the fluid pressure. Fig. 1 shows a valve for the selective draining of three tanks connected to ports 7, 8, 9, the actuating pressure being applied through the port 4 and the piston formed with a draining duct 13. Fig. 3 shows a modification in which the pressure liquid is distributed through a central bore 18 and a radial bore communicating therewith to one of three ports 15, 16, 17 connected to tanks to be filled. In this case, rotation is imparted to the axially-moving piston by a ball 20 engaging a helical groove 19 in the surface of the piston. In another arrangement, the piston 9, Fig. 4, picks up weights 25, 26 as it moves. Fig. 5 shows a valve for use with a double-acting power piston cylinder, the opposite ends of which are connected to the valve ports 30, 31. Upon the application of low pressure to the port 4 the piston is moved so that the ports 30, 31 are connected via the duct 34 in the piston. Increase in the fluid pressure aligns the piston passages 33 with the port 30, so that pressure liquid passes to one end of the power cylinder, which liquid is forced from the opposite end to the port 31 and thence via the groove 31a in the valve casing to the exhaust port 32. In a modification, the valve is provided with an additional port, whereby pressure liquid may be applied to either end of the power cylinder. Specific applications of the valve of Fig. 5 and of the modification are described in Specification 621,952.
