Abstract
882,417. Power steering. HYDROSTEER Ltd. March 13, 1958 [March 26, 1957], No. 9866/57. Class 79(5). In a vehicle power steering system a control valve 10 carried on the periphery of a ball nut 14 and reciprocably mounted within the operating piston 5 is provided with differential pressure reaction surfaces 16, 25, 26 arranged to bias the valve 10 to its neutral position. Supply and return passages 27, 28 are connected with the valve 10 through radial passage 17 and recesses 22 in the piston 5. Controlling fluid is directed through channels 18, 18<SP>1</SP> to opposite end chambers 19, 20 in the cylinder 4. The valve 10 which is normally retained in the central position by spring washers 12 is further biased by unbalanced opposed pressures in the valve recess 16 or on the opposite ends 25, 26, the end 25 being at the same pressure as the end 26 in the chamber 19 due to leakage of oil through the ball nut into the internal recess 23.
