Abstract

885,393. Valves. ZAHNRADFABRIK FRIEDRICHSHAFEN A.G. July 18, 1958 [July 18, 1957], No. 23178/58. Class 135. A relief valve comprises a piston closure member 3 in a cylinder 2 formed with inlet and relief ports 14, 29 respectively, the piston being formed with passages 16, 18 placing the ports 14 in communication with the pressure line, and being acted upon by a compression spring 7 in a fluid chamber 24 constituted by a recess in the rear portion of the piston and communicating with the passages 16, 18 through an orifice 23, whereby the valve is prevented from operating as the result of temporary surges in the pressure line. The piston is retained in its normal axial position by a spring ring 4. The valve may be adapted to operate also as a flowregulating valve by mounting the piston-cylinder unit in a housing provided with inlet, outlet and relief ports, the effective area of the outlet port being controlled by the left-hand end of the cylinder under the action of a loading spring, Fig. 3 (not shown). The valve may be employed in a vehicle power-assisted steering system.
