835,959. Conveying solids in liquids ; selective pipe coupling devices. PHOENIXRHEINROHR A.G. Sept. 30, 1957 [Sept. 28, 1956], No. 30555/57. Classes 99(1) and 102(2). A multiway valve for controlling the distribution of a granular material in liquid suspension, such as coal in water, comprises a cylindrical valve body 6 housing a cup like valve member 7 axially rotatable by means of a handle 10 extending through a slot in the body and having ports 18, 19 for co-operation with corresponding outlet ports 11, 12 in the end of the body. Pipe 3 conveys the granular suspension to the valve body, within which a flexible pipe 9 leads to the port 19 in the valve member ; similarly, pipes 4, 8 convey liquid to the valve member port 18. The ports 11, 12, 18, 19 each extend through 105 degrees of arc. In operation, the granular material is distributed from port 11, and to change over valves 15, 17 are opened to flush out the other pipe system, the handle 10 is then rotated through 180 degrees, and the valves 16, 17 closed after the original pipe system has been flushed out. The 105 degrees arc of the ports 11, 12, 18, 19 prevents the valve member 7 from shutting off the supply and causing shocks in the system. In a modification the flexible pipe 8 is omitted and the pipe 9 may be rotatably coupled to the valve body at a point coincident with the axis of the valve member ; this enables 3 or 4 outlet distribution pipes to be provided. In a further modification, the valve members slide rectilinearly relative to each other.
