Abstract
835,673. Making moulds from powdered metal. OWENS-ILLINOIS GLASS CO. Sept. 16, 1958 [Sept. 16, 1957], No. 29597/58. Class 87(2). [Also in Groups II and XXIII] A mould, for making hollow glass articles in which the heated article is enclosed in a finishing mould and expanded to conform thereto, is fabricated of powdered metal of predetermined porosity and capable of absorbing a volatilizable liquid such as water converted to a gaseous, such as steam, cushion by the heated article during finishing. Nodules N of powdered metal such as copper coated with a thin layer of tin are compacted and sintered to leave voids V at a temperature of 1050-1825F in a reducing atmosphere for 20-30 minutes. The nodule sizes, of from 60-150 mesh, are chosen to determine the ultimate porosity and may be varied as in the ranges L, M; N to vary the rate of cooling in the mould 14. The mould 14 may be sprayed with water or may be dipped, the mould carriage 16 being cut away as shown to assist in the rapid filling of the voids V.
