Abstract

Porous silicon carbide bodies having a continuous reticulate network of cubic crystalline silicon carbide containing interstitial silicon and having glazed pore surfaces are made by forming a shaped carbon skeletal body, heating the body in the presence of silicon to above 1800 DEG C. and forcing a gas under pressure through the siliconized body to extract part of the interstitial silicon. When an oxidizing gas is forced through the body before it cools the pore surfaces are oxidized to a glaze. The interstitial silicon and the external surface of the body are also glazed.
