Abstract

Porous ceramic products are formed by shaping a wet mass of expanded aggregate (e.g. perlite, vermiculite, mineral wool, glass wool, foamed glass) in particulate form carrying a thin aqueous clay coating of between 50 and 300 x 10-7 cm. in thickness on the particles, the mass having a water content of 9-26% by volume of the dry ingredients, heating the mass in a furnace at 1450-1700 DEG F., and maintaining the mass at a surface temperature within said range for between 8 minutes (at 1700 DEG F.) and 60 minutes (at 1450 DEG F.). Preferably the clay coating includes bentonite and kaolinite clays in amounts 0.25-2% and 0.5-4% by volume of the mass respectively. The process may include the additional step of cooling the mass to room temperature in a period of less than 10 minutes.
