Abstract

A process of producing a porous insulatory product comprises mixing an expanded synthetic polymeric thermoplastics and/or thermosetting material with an inorganic binder having a melting-point above the temperature of vaporization of the thermoplastics and thermosetting material and with an inorganic filler, moulding the mixture to shape, heating the shaped mixture to cause vaporization of the polymer and cooling the mixture to form a porous product. A powdered filler of particle size between 0.06 and 0.2 mm., e.g. quartz, slag sand or fireclay and a gas-permeable filler, e.g. kieselguhr, asbestos, rice-straw ashes, vermiculite, diatomaceous earth may be used. Expanded or unexpanded thermoplastic material in thread or tubular form may also be present. Suitable inorganic binders (which are used in combination with water), are cement, fireproof cement, plaster of Paris, water glass, sulphite lye, or magnesite together with magnesium or sodium sulphate or sulphuric acid. Specified thermoplastic materials are polystyrene, polyvinyl chloride and polymethyl methacrylate. They may have a particle size of 0.1 mm. to 3.0 mm. The grain size and packing of the components may be chosen to give a wall thickness of binder of 5 to 200 microns between the pores in the product. The expanded thermoplastic or thermosetting material is preferably strengthened by storage for 8 to 14 days before it is mixed with the other ingredients. In an example, mouldings are prepared from a mixture of hydrocarbon-expanded polystyrene particles, finely-ground sand and fireproof cement and the moulded articles are dried at 60 DEG to 70 DEG C. and heated at 300 DEG C. to vaporize the polystyrene.ALSO:A process of producing a porous insulatory product comprises mixing an expanded synthetic polymeric thermoplastic and/or thermosetting material with an inorganic binder having a melting point above the temperature of vaporization of the thermosetting and thermoplastics material and with an inorganic filler, moulding the mixture to shape, heating the shaped mixture to cause vaporization of the polymer and cooling the mixture to form a porous product.
