Abstract

1,206,234. Porous aricles of polyethylene. PLAST-LABOR S.A. 24 Jan., 1968 [25 Jan., 1967], No. 3637/68. Headings C3C and C3P. Porous articles are produced by mixing particulate polyethylene with a water-soluble material which does not attack the polyethylene, melts above the sintering temperature of the polyethylene and has the same particle size as the polyethylene, sintering and dissolving out the water-soluble material. The polyethylene preferably has a particle size of less than 800 microns and may be used in from 20 to 30% by weight of the mixture. The water-soluble material may be sodium chloride. The sintering is preferably effecting by heating the mixture in a mould having thin walls to a temperature above the melting point of polyethylene. The mixture may be placed in a mould having a porous bottom through which hot air is caused to pass. The sintered material may then be soaked in water to remove the water soluble material, and dried. In the examples, finely divided polyethylene is mixed with common salt, sintered and the salt dissolved out of the mass with water.
