Abstract

A process for the manufacture of a light, porous particulate aggregate, characterized in that it comprises the steps of a) dissolve an alkali metal silicate in an amount of water sufficient to form a solution containing from about 35% to about 50% of total solids, and beat in that solution an amount from about 0.1 to about 50%, based on the weight of the finely divided silica, alkali metal silicate, an amount of about 0.1 to about 200%, based on the weight of the alkali metal silicate, of a finely divided alkaline earth metal silicate, and amounts suitable of other additives to provide modified and improved properties, in order to obtain a homogeneous mud; b) reducing the sludge thus obtained to particles of a preselected size, depending on the desired size of the finished aggregate; c) heating the particles thus obtained, at a temperature of about 110 to about 700ºC, for a period of from about 0.1 seconds to about 5 minutes to produce the necessary expansion of the particles through the blowing action of the released water vapor, with the formation of a large plurality of pores within each particle; d) burning the expanded and relatively dried particles, at a temperature of about 700 to about 1500ºC, for a period of from about 5 seconds to about 1 minute, to complete the expansion of the material and produce its vitrification; and e) slowly cool said fully expanded and vitrified particles at room temperature.
