Abstract

900,570. Moulds. BRISTOL AEROPLANE PLASTICS Ltd. Dec. 19, 1958 [Dec. 20, 1957], No. 39677/57. Class 87(2). A mould or mould part has a non-porous moulding face layer 2 of aluminium or other metal powder banded with an epoxy or other resin, temperature changing means such as an electric heating element or conduits 4 for heating or cooling fluid, a concrete mass 5 for supporting the layer 2 against working loads, and a heat barrier layer 6 between the layer 2 and the mass 5 of a material capable of transmitting the working loads to the mass 5 and having a thermal conductivity lower than that of the mass 5. Preferably the layer 6 consists of a mixture of slate flour and epoxide resin in the ratio 6: 1 by weight. In one method of forming a mould the layer 2 is applied to the surface of a former of the same shape as the desired mould cavity and the conduits 4 or an electric heating grid incorporated in the layer 2, which is allowed to set with a roughened or grooved surface. The layer 6 is then applied to the layer 2 and allowed to set. The former carrying the layers 2, 6 is then supported in shuttering for the application of the concrete mass 5. In an alternative method the concrete mass 5 is formed in shuttering and allowed to set, the layer 6 is applied thereto and allowed to set, and the conduits 4 or an electric heating grid then applied together with the layer 2, which is formed with the desired surface either by hand tools or by the application thereto of a former. When it is necessary to form the layer 2 in sections metal members may be embedded in the concrete for supporting a number of formes.
