Abstract

1,010,390. Moulds suitable for making polyurethane articles. SINGER-COBBLE Ltd. Aug. 11, 1964 [May 20, 1963], No. 19932/63. Heading B5A. A method of making a mould involves providing a model 1, 2, which may be of wood, with a divided encasement 5, embedding in at least one portion thereof a resistance heating element 6, thermally insulating the encasement as at 7 and providing a multi-part mould box 8, 10 which has a division in the same plane as that lying between the parts of the encasement. In the embodiment shown, a sheet or foil 4 is placed between model halves 1, 2, held together by pegs 3, the model is covered with a release agent and sprayed or coated with a fine paste, e.g. of mica in a thermosetting-resin, which is cured. The heating elements 6 are laid in position and after a second layer of the paste is applied to complete the encasement, the elements may be used to effect curing thereof. The insulation layer 7 which may be applied as an asbestos slurry may also be dried by the elements 6. The foil 4 is pinned to box part 8 and the latter is filled, e.g. with rigid foam 9. Box part 10 is now applied and similarly filled. Wires may be incorporated between the layers forming the encasement 5 and/or between the encasement and the insulation layer 7 and between this and the filling 9. Also the heating elements 6 may be stapled in position and a thermo-responsive detector may be incorporated in the encasement. The mould is particularly intended for the production of foamed polyurethane articles such as cushions, seat squares and packaging components and may be provided with suitable filling holes, breathers and risers.
