Abstract

1499132 Moulds OWENS-ILLINOIS Inc 7 Feb 1975 [11 Feb 1974] 5255/75 Heading C1M [Also in Division B5] A mould for removing heat from a hot mass of thermoplastic material (e.g. glass) comprises a mould insert 10 and 18 (Fig. 1) and an insert holder 16, provided with passageway for a cooling fluid, with a heat insulating sleeve 14 and 22 therebetween. The sleeve has a heat conductivity substantially less than that of the insert or the holder (e.g. 120 to 10 times less), is preferably made of a multilayer composite (e.g. asbestos fabric sandwiched with two layers of graphite), and may have apertures therein to modify its heat transfer characteristics. The mould may be made of two or more mould segments or may be made as one piece (see Fig. 5, not shown) which shows a parison mould) and may have one or more cavities. The insert and the insert holder may be made of grey cast iron and the cooling fluid may be compressed air or water. The moulds may be used in an I.S. machine.
