Abstract
1,062,528. Making moulds; composite casting. D. ST. L. EVANS. Feb. 3, 1964 [Dec. 6, 1962], No. 46132/62. Headings B3A and B3F. [Also in Division B5] A mould or mould insert, for use in moulding plastics, and glass, is made by forming a female cavity portion 7 of an elastomeric synthetic or natural material capable of gelling from a liquid around a male model 1, removing the male model, forming a refractory male model 9 in the female cavity portion which is then removed, spraying the exposed refractory male 9 with a relatively hard metal, 10, and then spraying, casting, or fuzing a softer metal backing 12 on to the harder metal 10 and removing the refractory model 9. The thickness of the layer 10 may be from a few hundredths of an inch to half an inch and the backing metal 12 may incorporate cooling channels 13. Before casting the layer 10 may be fluxed or fused by an oxyacetylene flame. The casting may be performed by fusing a mixture of metal powder and flux in the mould 11.
