Abstract

835,419. Surface condensers. HICK, HARGREAVES & CO. Ltd., and ARROWSMITH, R. M. June 4, 1957 [July 20, 1956], No. 22628/56. Class 64(3) A steam condenser installation for steam power plant comprises a reserve condenser 4 having its water cooling connection 9, 10 in parallel with those of one or more steam turbine condensers 1, 2, 3 and arranged to receive surplus steam over and above that required for operation of the turbine or turbines, the reserve condenser being contructed or proportioned and the cooling water discharged therefrom being mixed in the discharge line 8 with the cooling water discharged from the turbine condenser or condensers, such that under surplus steam conditions in which cooling water flows through all the condensers including the reserve condenser, the temperature of the discharged cooling water does not exceed a predetermined maximum. Under normal conditions the reserve condenser 4 is maintained fully primed by providing a small continuous flow of cooling water therethrough by way of a constantly open by-pass connection which includes a valve 13. Under surplus steam conditions a valve 11 is opened either automatically or otherwise to bring the reserve condenser into operation.
