Abstract

498,188. Walls. ENGLISH ELECTRIC CO., Ltd., and SEEWER, P. W. Oct. 4, 1937, No. 26837. [Class 68 (ii)] [Also in Group XXVI] In an hydraulic power installation in which one or more closed conduits 2 convey water to the power house from one or more sluices of a dam 1 having other sluices, not shown, discharging into the open stream below the dam, a conduit enclosure formed by walls 3 attached to the dam 1 is filled with clean water for exerting a force on the insides of the walls to counteract that exerted by the river water outside. This avoids the possibility of impurities in the water interfering with the working of expansion joints in the conduit. The walls 3 may be connected with the dam 1 by expansion joints. The level of the water inside is maintained automatically the same as that outside. Should the automatic level control fail, water flows one way or the other as required through holes in the walls, some of which have one way valves opening inwards and others opening outwards.
