Abstract

700,320. Weir for the tailrace of a hydraulic turbine. ENGLISH ELECTRIC CO., Ltd. April 25, 1952 [May 11, 1951], No. 11112/51. Class 68(2) The raising and lowering of a weir arrangement for the tailrace of a hydraulic reaction turbine is automatically controlled by a device responsive to the water level of the tailrace. A screen 5 pivoted on a knuckle joint 6 on the bottom of tailrace 2 is connected at its ends by rods 7 to the downstream ends of balance beams 3 which are mounted on piers 1 flanking the tailrace 2. The balancing weight of counterpoises 8, linked to the upstream ends of the beams 3, varies according to their submergence in the water, the counterpoises losing much of their weight due to buoyancy when the water level rises so that the screen 5 and the water level drops, and on becoming less submerged, as the water level drops, overbalancing the screen 5 to raise it so that the water in the tailrace is dammed up to a minimum level L. The screen can be operated by fluid pressure, servo-motors, or electric motors, which are controlled by the tailrace water level, or the screen can be controlled remotely.
